Project: Newquay Cornwall Airport (UK)

Client: Cornwall Council

Airport Planning and Development has provided operations and planning advice to the civil airport operator in the transition period from military controlled airfield to a full civil operation, which involved a major contribution to the CAA Aerodrome Licensing procedure and all required Safety Case preparation, technical assessments and liaison with construction and specialist equipment contractors, operations training and liaison with the military on its 'closure' programme. APD provided airport financial management support to the airport company (financial planning, budgets, systems etc). Newquay Cornwall airport was granted its civil licence in December 2008. Currently, APD is managing a proposal for Airspace Change for the airport company.

Airport Planning & Development provided a support to a technical review of the airport consulted on behalf of financial sponsors. The areas of the review in which the company contributed were on airside capacity (runway, taxiway and apron) and passenger terminal facility capacities.

Project: Cranfield Airport

Client: Cranfield Airport Ltd

Country: UK

Airport Planning & Development has advised the airport company, recently, on the implications of a nearby proposed wind farm on the airports intention to upgrade its navigation aids including the implentation of a new radar. The company is responsible, also, for the conduct of presentations to public consultees. The process will include collating and responding to comments, and assisting the airport to ratify and implement new ATC procedures.

Project: Egelsbach Airfield

Client: Netjets

Country: Germany

On behalf of Netjets (Europe), Airport Planning & Development completed a full operations audit of the airfield as part of due diligence, leading to the completion of the airport's acquisition

Project: Shannon Customs and Border Protection Facility

Country: Ireland

Airport Planning & Development, with White Young Green (WYG) and McAllister Armstrong Partner (MAP), assisted the management team at Shannon Airport with the development of the existing US Customs Border Protection (CBP) facilities to meet the latest US security requirements. The project considered the implications on passenger and baggage handling facilities throughout the airport. Further Operational advice has been provided as the project moved from the design phase into construction.

Project: Berlin Brandenburg International Airport

Airport Planning & Development provided support to a technical review of the airport consulted on behalf of financial sponsors. The areas of the review in which the company contributed were on airside capacity (runway, taxiway and apron) and passenger terminal facility capacities. The airport will open in 2011 and capacity has been evaluated over several years.

Project: Airports Authority

Client: Grand Turk Airport and Providenciales Airport

Country: Turks & Caicos Islands

For the Airports Authority, in 2008, Airport Planning and Development's submitted its Providenciales Airport Master Plan and Report on the development options for extending and improving the runway, airfield infrastructure improvements, and the provision of improved passenger terminal facilities. The runway was extended in 2010-11. The report and outline Master Plan included advice on capital costs, programming and outline design options for the passenger terminal. APD completed a further review of the Airport Master Plan in 2013, including examination of design proposals for the terminal extension.

In 2011, APD produced Master Plan for South Caicos Airport, which involved a construction programme for the part rehabilitation and part extension of the runway.

Project: Terminal Extension - Facilities Commissioning

Client: Dublin International Airport

Country: Republic of Ireland

Responsible for the provision of operational and technical services, and liaison with operators, in respect of the commissioning of a major extension to the passenger terminal. The work included organising the transfer of operations, in a safe and secure manner from existing facilities into the new facilities whilst maintaining the delivery of services at acceptable service standards.

Project: Facilities Upgrade

Client: Gan Airport, Maldives

Country: Maldives

The upgrade and refurbishment of Gan Airport to serve an expanding tourism market. The project includes:

Passenger Terminal construction
New/Improved Taxiways & Aprons
Improved ATC Tower & air navigation equipment, including Airfield ground lighting
Airport Planning & Development is responsible for airport management & operations input to the design & development process, and for ensuring air safety compliance during construction, and for the commissioning of the new facilities including operations training for new/existing staff.

Project: Balaton Airport

Airport Planning & Development is conducting further review of operations and providing strategic advice to ensure aerodrome licensing compliance.

Project: Galway Airport

Client: National Roads Agency/Galway Airport

Safety assessment of the impact of the Galway Outer Bypass on the existing and planned runway extension at Galway Airport.
Also revision of Master Plan associated with our preliminary design and safety assessment for major runway extension.

TAG Farnborough

In 2015, Airport Planning and Development provided operations and aerodrome licensing advice to the airport, and acted as an 'expert witness' on this subject in its recent High Court case.

George Best Belfast City Airport

Client: Belfast Harbour Commission

The Airport has submitted a planning application for the extension of the runway. Belfast Harbour Commission has retained Airport Planning & Development to advise on the implications of the proposal for its current and future land/property interests, including aerodrome safeguarding, noise implications and impact of surface access to, and security of, the Port.

Project: Sohar Airport

Country: Oman

The new Sohar Airport project incorporates terminal, runway/taxiways, navaids, ATC and RFFS facilities, cargo and fuel farm. Airport Planning & Development has provided the design contractor with detailed design review of the terminal facilities and airfield licensing implications. Following the submission of detailed design specification documents for Terminal CCTV, Access control, Hold baggage system and Annex 17 security requirements, FIDS and PA System, Airport Planning & Development will assist with tender evaluation and appointment.

Project: Palmyra Airport

Country: Syria

Airport Planning & Development is advising government on the location and outline configuration of a new airport for Palmyra, and an interim strategy for maintaining air services to the city in the short term.

Project: Windfarm Developments

Client: Renewable Energy Organisations

Country: United Kingdom

Airport Planning & Development has advised 'renewable energy' organisations in regards to aviation aspects associated with windfarms in England and Scotland, including large scale projects in Liverpool Bay and Greater Thames Estuary. Operational and technical studies are prepared to analyse the impact of windfarm developments on air navigation equipment and air traffic control services, and to identify appropriate mitigation measures. Our current workloads includes projects in Durham, Yorkshire and Wiltshire and East Anglia (off shore). Recently, APD has carried out a number of aviation assessments of the potential impact of proposed 'Waste to Energy' projects on the delivery of air Traffic Management services by nearby airports.

Project: Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield

Since 1997, Airport Planning & Development has been involved, substantially, in the redevelopment of RAF Finningley (now Robin Hood Airport) as a Commercial Airport. Operations commenced in Spring 2005. APD has been involved in the following areas

Operations: Airport Planning & Development provided senior operations staff (including the Acting Operations Director) for the transition of the airport to full operating capability. This involved the development of operating programmes and strategies, including the security programme and liaising with UK CAA.

CAA Licensing Procedures: Airport Planning & Development, in conjunction with the client, was responsible for producing the Airport's Aerodrome Manual and associated operating procedures which form the basis on which the Licensee was granted.

Business Planning: The establishment of the Business Case, and identification of the key sectors of activity, was the starting point for preparing proposals for the development of the new airport. In conjunction with the client, Airport Planning & Development was involved in the development of the strategic business case, the co-ordination of the demand forecasts, and the preparation of the outline Business Plan and financial forecasts.

Town & Country Planning Procedures:

The development of the new airport required planning consent through UK Town & Country Planning Act procedures. Airport Planning & Development was responsible for co-ordinating the planning application and for submission to, and negotiations with, the planning authority. The application was considered at a Public Inquiry and APD provided expert witnesses on planning, operations and airport safety.

As part of the development of the new airport facility, Airport Planning & Development continues to be responsible for linking the construction and operational objectives to satisfy the planning conditions set out in the Planning Consent. APD is involved, extensively, in the review of the Airport Master Plan.

APD continues to provide planning advice and operations advice including restructuring and reorganisation of the business.
